Readings & Films/Videos:
There are several required readings in this course, all of which have either been written specifically for the lessons they introduce or selected from an outside source (“Standards of Professional Practice”, selected from the AIGA) to support a lesson’s objective. Each reading will require a follow-up assignment. These assignments include written reflections, responses, quizzes, and summaries.
Films and videos, most of which are less than 10 minutes each, will also require a response in the form of a similar reflection or response as found in the readings. These introduce topics found in the introduction, review and discussion portion of the following class and should therefore be completed beforehand.
The instructor facilitates communication of necessary goals, strategy, process, theme, required elements and technical specifications, but also ensures that visual and technical discussions continue throughout the studio time which will foster the successful completion of individual assignments that will then be used in group critique. Prior to the studio session, the instructor provides examples of other successful design pieces as they relate to the assignment and discusses their efficacy in design, communication, and technical specification.
Most projects will be completed in class during independent studio work sessions. Some projects can be completed in part for homework. These include those that require portions of introductory reading, review, or research.
Group Critiques & Self-Assessments:
A group critique and discussion takes place after the studio session where work is set out and analyzed by all students. The instructor leads the critique using VTS and Socratic dialogue methods to ensure all students contribute their thoughts on what makes work successful, including:
• what techniques, materials, and design practices were used;
• how visual, informational, and technical problems were solved;
• how typographic and illustrative elements and color palettes were combined;
Using the contributions from the instructor and fellow students, as well as their own contributions and self-reflection, students will then complete an assessment of their work based on overall success using rating factors (will vary depending on assignment), what they learned, what they would like to learn more about, what they would like to try if given the opportunity to complete a similar project, what they can improve on and how in the future.
Each student is required to have a sketchbook, drawing pencils, and inking pens. These will be discussed in the first class, and any student who does not have access or ability to allocate these tools will be provided them to use during class. Adjustments may be made to provide materials on a take-home basis, if needed. You may speak to the instructor privately in order to discuss options.
